Overview:
The fall season is almost upon us and will bring cooler water temperatures, which are ideal for targeting redfish. Currently, schools of redfish are active throughout Pine Island Sound, making now a prime time to get out on the water. Our anglers are reporting excellent catches, with many fish ranging between 25-30 inches.
Tides & Weather:
Optimal fishing conditions have coincided with the incoming tides during the early morning hours and just before sunset. The steady breeze from the east is keeping water clarity in decent shape, and the moderate winds have not been a deterrent.
Hot Spots:
Redfish have been schooling around the grass flats near Captiva Pass and the southern edges of Cayo Costa. The deeper channels and cuts between islands are holding larger fish. Look for schools near mangrove shorelines and oyster bars at mid-tide for the best action.
Best Baits & Tackle:
Live shrimp and pinfish under popping corks are working well, but artificial baits are also producing results. Soft plastics in gold and copper hues mimicking baitfish are attracting aggressive strikes. Topwater plugs at dawn or dusk have been particularly effective in triggering bites from larger fish in shallow waters.
Pro Tips:
- Keep an eye on diving birds, which are a telltale sign of baitfish and schooling redfish nearby.
- Light tackle with 20-30 lb fluorocarbon leaders is recommended to avoid spooking the fish in clear water.
- When you spot a school, approach slowly to avoid scattering them, and try fan casting to cover more water.
Summary:
With redfish schooling in Pine Island Sound, now is the perfect time to plan a fishing trip. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a novice, the action is hot, and the fish are hungry!
Tight lines and good luck!
